This page will act as a “clearing house” for unwanted incenses. First the history….
In sampling and buying incense it’s inevitable that one will end up with boxes of incense that one doesn’t like, especially if you’re not buying samplers. It’s occured to us that there should be a way of unloading these unwanted incenses, so as a matter of experiment I spent a good month or two piling incenses I didn’t want and mailing them to friends of the site. The idea would be that these friends would keep any incenses they liked, add more incenses that they didn’t like from their own collection and send the package on to the next person.
This should work OK, but having no idea what kind of response an idea like this will get, it’s possible to start more than one “chain” if necessary. So I’d like to encourage people to not only be part of the chain if they’re interested by posting in the comments, but also to hear of any ideas about how things should work. More from me in the comments…

Hello. I am relatively new to your forum and would like to start by saying that if I am accepted into the “fold” I will probably be around for a while, you see incense is my passion, I have been burning for about 15 years, but about four or five years ago, I left grocery store incense behind thanks to the wonder that is the internet and my collection is now huge. But enough on that, you asked for ideas, so here is one that I just had. If somone else had it before, I did not steal it I just did not take the time to read the whole forum. On the idea of un-wanted scents, instead of putting it all in one box and shipping it around, you could also create an on site list where people list the items and descriptions along with their opinions about it and then interested parties can make an request or even an offer if the stuff is originally expensive, you know let the two parties work it out between themselves. I’d welcome feedback or even opinions as I can’t wait to get to know some other people with the same”thing” for incense as I have. I am passionate about it, and I am one of those people that like to share what I know if it can be of any use at all to anyone. Sincerely, Popsrobert P.S. has anyone thought about posting a list of what is in the box already?

I think I’m going to pass on the feedback. But there’s no “fold” or secret society here so I’ll leave the floor to whoever wants it.

I think I’m likely to get the box out to, I think Kristin, probably around the first of October. I did want to mention, Malchus, since I ran across it again scanning the comments looking for something that I just tried the Golden Champa from Vijayshree and loved it, truly one of the better Nag Champas out there, sweet and likely containing halmaddi. I’ll be doing a survey of these in the near future that should cover Bam, Raj Laxmi, Goloka, Shanthimalai, Vijayshree and one or two other champas. Other than the Goloka they’ll all be among the best of what’s out there.

If possible i would surely like to be in the circle again, whenever it will fit in fine.
I think discarding Padmini Koko is fine, and some others in a box like this as well, but finally likes and dislikes are very personal, and i guess there are some people who really like stuff others can’t imagine anyone liking it. (I really like this blog, but often i’m not agreeing with what is says, but i’ll find that just the interesting point, and overall it gave me the experience that pretty much everybody is unique in his fragrance likes and dislikes…).
I also think that sometimes it is good to actually add some sticks whom you like to the box (as i did with Aastha and Royal), but i had quite enough of them for a while, and i got quite alot left, as it makes the whole thing more enjoyfull.
Oh, and i kept one of the Gonesh ones as i liked the design
Oh and Mike, did you ever try the “Golden Nag Champa” (They’ve also got a “Golden Chandan which i have not tried yet) from Vijayshree Fragrance. I actually quite liked it (I could not try out Bam Champa yet as i could not find it in any European net store). It would be nice to hear your thoughts about it.
The first link with dollar prices i’ve found here, but these prices are really expensive: http://www.bighappybuddha.com/gonagchin.html
Well, and finally i apologize for my english, i’m currently not so much into it.
All the best

Hi Malchus, I also included some incenses I liked in the box before sending it on – generally not whole packets but large enough samples for the next person to be able to decide whether they liked them or not. The reviews on here are really helpful and I make great use of them but nothing beats actually smelling something for yourself… and I certainly appreciated the Aastha you had added after sampling those rotting fish ones!
Mike said,
July 8, 2009 at 8:23 am
Malchus, thanks for your comments and cautionary note on discards. We do indeed want to be judicious with what we decided to do away with. I’ve only thrown away the Koko because I’m convinced that in the state it’s in that it resembles a chemistry experiment gone bad and that even with the obvious diversity in tastes people have there’s really noone who will like this in anyway, it’s like a poison now. But in the case where there are Padmini and Hem sticks in there, yes I find them pretty awful but I can still imagine not everyone will feel the same way. I think this is where we want to draw the line, if a stick does attempt a pleasant aroma and just fails for your taste that would not be enough to get rid of it. And really for those who are part of the circle, this is also a good threshold with which to consider what to add to the box. If it’s really downright bad, it doesn’t need to be added. At the same time as a box of people’s discards we don’t want to set our sights too high and expect the best of the best in here either.
Appreciate the link to the Golden Nag Champa, I have not tried it myself but anything like that certainly gets my attention. And also thanks to everyone adding good stuff, it definitely improves the experience for all!

Another question that comes to mind for me is whether it is okay to include packages with not many sticks left. I have a couple (a Ramakrishnanda and a Mystic Temple come to mind) that I really *wanted* to like, so I tried enough times to burn at least half of the box.
As a person who has only been into incense for a few months (although I have tried quite a lot in that time), but has been working with essential oils and absolutes for several years – I have close to 150 of those – I find that I’m having to “deprogram” myself. Someone posted about enjoying some scents much more when he let go of preconceived notions of what they “should” smell like….I find that I have to work at not dismissing a scent out of hand simply because it doesn’t smell just like the oil.
Because of this, I do tend to try more than once, and it has worked for several…..and others I just don’t like no matter how hard I try – not because they aren’t good, but just because of preference.
Oh, and one other aside – the reason a scent junkie like myself has just now begun to try incense – when I was about 8 a friend of mine and I stole a box of strawberry dipped cones from a Woolworth’s….and they made me so ill I never wanted to try again….it’s taken me 36 years to work up the nerve, and I might not have without the guidance of this site.
So I won’t ever voluntarily purchase charcoal blanks dipped in synthetics!!
Sorry for the long post just to ask one question!
Mike said,
July 7, 2009 at 8:57 am
Yes, it’s absolutely OK to add even a sample of one stick if you don’t need it anymore. I know there were a couple things in the box that won’t go farther than me just because that’s all that was left.
I agree that expectations and preconceptions play a large part in what we like and dislike and I often try to find methods to eliminate them when I do reviews, sometimes by blind testing or spacing them out over a period of time, or comparing them to some similar scent with another company.
And there was a Strawberry Cone just like the one you mentioned by a company called Darshan in the box. It’s amazing how bad and different it is compared to similar work by Fred Soll.

I would be interested in signing up for the new trading circle, if there are any details about how it works that can’t be found in the comments, please let me know!
I love your site, I am new to incense (although have been a perfumer and e.o. addict for years), and left to my own devices would probably have stumbled on stuff that would have sent me running….as it is, I think Beth, Katlyn, and others are going to find they have a new best friend!

Hi Janet, basically it works this way. When you get the box, you can keep anything in it that you like and get rid of anything you own you don’t like by adding it to the box. That way, we hope, incenses find some new homes. Thanks a lot for the comments.
Right now I have me>Dan F>Kristin>Janet as the queue.

Hi again Mike,
If there is going to be a lot of new stuff in the box then I would like to be added to the list again. When I reviewed the last lot you proposed reversing the order that the box went round this time as those of us at the end of the last round got a box that was nearly all stuff that hardly anyone was likely to like (remember all those that I described as rotting fish?). Are you still thinking of doing this?
I know that Rachel took some stuff out that she liked when I forwarded the box to her, but I had specially added some of my own better stuff for her to sample as we often swap our stuff online anyway. Maybe some of it got as far as Pinji and Dan – I hope so as it is nice to find a pleasant surprise in the box!
Best wishes, Claire
Mike said,
July 7, 2009 at 6:51 am
Hi Claire, I’d be happy to add you to the circle after Janet, that’s probably the best I can do, it would put you first in line for the repeats. I think the thing that’s important to state is that the entire trading circle box is a collection of everyone’s discards and I wouldn’t necessarily assume that my discards are somehow going to be that much better than the next person’s. But consider this, Rachel sent the package to Pinjie. As far as I remember Pinjie didn’t take anything from the box, but I did find some things I liked in it after her. So it’s definitely going to depend on taste and inclination (for example a lot of Japanese incense lovers just don’t really get on with Indian masalas, in their case maybe the box won’t be much to their liking).
I was thinking however, maybe it would be a good idea for each person in the chain to ritually eliminate 1 or 2 of what they consider the worst incenses in the pile by discarding them. I’ll let that be a point for discussion. I’m certainly tossing out the Padmini Koko as I’m dead sure there’s noone out there who could possibly like it. And I would also suggest that in a big box full of all kinds of scents that some things are going to clash pretty badly. When I opened the box I thought it was pretty awful too but once I separated things and let it air out that mostly disappeared (save for a couple of the very worst offenders).
Claire said,
July 7, 2009 at 7:25 am
Hi Mike,
thanks for your fast reply. Yes, you make a valid point, I probably am assuming that rejects from yourself or other serious incense buyers are going to be better than rejects from more casual buyers like myself but that’s a BIG assumption and I really have nothing to base it on. So I’ve just helped myself to a large slice of humble pie.
I like your suggestion of each person eliminating the worst 2 or 3 they find in the box as whilst there will always be personal preference for style, there are equally always going to be some that no-one is likely to like. It seems a costly exercise (w.r.t. postal charges) to forward those ones on just for the sake of it, plus why torture people when they could be spared the olfactory pain of something that smells like rotten fish!
Mike said,
July 7, 2009 at 7:51 am
Well in your favor, I can pretty much guarantee you that even as an experiment I’m unlikely to buy charcoal dipped incenses. i can tell you now as well after this box that I’ll never touch a Padmini product again as long as I live. And also that I tend to discard sort of a lower fraction of what I own every so often, which probably means as I get more incense that fraction will probably improve, slightly anyway.
I removed the Koko though, because I think it was a hugely synthetic stuck that may have gone really bad, because it barely even resembled the coconut it was supposed to anymore and was really noxious and I wouldn’t be surprised if the rotten fish smell you experienced came from it, especially as this sort of coconut has those associations we make with suntan lotion and all. That is, there are a lot of incenses I consider bad in the box, but if I could imagine someone else might disagree they should stay. On the other hand, there were quite a few Shrinivas scents in there including some I thiink are really good (Aastha and Royal come to mind), a whole line of French imported Indian durbars that were definitely among my lines and a whole bunch of other things I haven’t gotten around to yet. I also think it’s hilarious ironic that two of the Nippon Kodo Free Pure Spirit incenses I put in the box are still in there, so it even goes to show you there are some Japanese sticks noone likes.
But overall I think there were only about 10 (of approx 50-100) incenses in there that were charcoal punks with oils and most of those were Padmini Indian incenses. Which is really a relatively small number for what is widely considered the least attractive type of incense. And I certainly don’t blame anyone for adding these to the box, after all if I’d own them I’d have put them there too. But I would say for discarding purposes to only discard bad charcoal punk incenses. Generally anything masala like I’d probably still like to try.
The other thing for anyone reading this (not you Claire) is it’s important to label what you put in there as well. There was a small roll of a really nice Tibetan I liked, very much an evergreen with amber sort of thing I’d love to have known what it was, but it wasn’t labelled.
Mike said,
July 7, 2009 at 7:54 am
Oh and one other thing, I just remembered that I’m pretty sure I added three charcoal Gonesh sticks to the package that I disliked. They’re not in there anymore, so someone must have liked them enough to remove them. So that probably says something too…

I’m wondering if the unlabelled Tibetan was:
http://humphreym.f2s.com/product_info.php?cPath=28&products_id=96
as I added that but the label may have gone astray afterwards as the cellophane wrapping that kept the label in was quite flimsy. I have flagged up this incense ’somewhere-else’ on this blog as I thought that you would like it on the basis of it being similar to another incense you liked (which I think was by Lung Ta although I can’t find the posting to verify that).
I also reviewed it (cut and pasted here to save you searching):
The price of this totally belies its quality – it has a distinct aroma and doesn’t have any of the smell of cheap filler woods so often associated with incenses this cheap. In that regard it is comparable to the Stupa incenses, which are also surprisingly good and aromatic considering their price.
It has a warm, “red”, slightly sour, slightly raw tobacco-like aroma with a very subtle farmyard undertone. It’s one of those that would be ideal to burn in the kitchen whilst preparing food (which makes me think of the sort of incenses that Steve likes) – you can’t help but think of food and it certainly gets the appetite going… and yet it is remarkably relaxing and calming.
It would be ideal to try this if you are on a tight budget…in fact, I personally think it would be worth checking out even if you aren’t on a tight budget!
Claire said,
July 7, 2009 at 9:38 am
Doh! should have explained that that Tibetan incense wasn’t in the box because I didn’t like it as I do like it, I just added so that Rachel could try it! Not sure whether she tried it or not before forwarding the box on.
Mike said,
July 7, 2009 at 10:05 am
Hey Claire, thanks for looking that up for me. There were actually several unlabelled incenses in the box and at least a couple were Tibetan. this one wasn’t smooth, it had the sort of rough appearance that belies a lot of evergreen needle content and indeed had the sort of strong pine and cypress hints that Dhoop Factory incenses have, yet the basies seemed to be sweet and amber like. It was in its own way unlike anything else and it came rolled up first with some card-like paper that had writing on it and celophane on top of that. It was also quite fragmented by the time I saw it, so I have no idea the natural length of the incense. It was similar to your review in that it wasn’t cheap, I could perhaps see the description as slightly red or even sour, but it didn’t strike me as tobacco like at all.
I did see you had forrwaded on the Nirvana B though. I will say your version is quite different than the one I tried, similar enough that I know it’s suppsed to be the same incense but either formulas had changed or the relative age is different. Mine’s a lot more brittle and fragile than the one you sent and I think it’s because the version I had had a different filler material.

And here’s an update on the trading circle box. I have it at the moment. We hadn’t heard from Dan F, and Pinjie suggested sending it to me to check out where it’s been and since she’s only a couple hours from me, I agreed. So, some thoughts…
It looks like it has been relatively successful. All but two incenses I sent out in the initial batch have found new homes and ironically these two are Japanese incenses, which rarely survive even a round of the circle. Most of what is left is a mix of 60% Indian, 25% Tibetan and 15% US. There are indeed some really wicked bad things in the box (Padmini Koko anyone?) but I found some things in there I’d never have gotten rid of, so I think generally the experiment has been successful. I’ll be adding a bunch of new discards to the box and substituting a few things out, so it will be refreshed and move on in 4-6 weeks. Dan F, if you keep up with this you have that long to send me your address via the About page, otherwise I’ll move it on to Kristin. Anyway at this point in the game please sign up if you’re interested in being part of it and if we don’t have any new takers, I’ll open it back up to people who have already been part of the circle in the early months, as I would guess it’s largely been refreshed since you saw the box last.
Oh and unless anyone says otherwise, I’m tossing the Padmini Koko. There’s incense I don’t like and then there’s incense I’m quite confident noone would like and this is one of em.

Rachel I’ll be passing along the address hopefully tonight now I’ve gotten Pinjie’s address for you. I’ve got another batch to go once we end up getting through the circle so we don’t want the box to get too big.
Rachel L said,

Hi folks! I have been letting that box of many many incenses intimidate me, so I picked 15 incenses out of it (and it hardly made a dent in the box!), and I’m going to ship it to the next person as soon as I get the address – I believe that is Pinjie, yes?
I’ve noted the names and makers of the stuff I’ve kept and I”m starting to test them. I picked them on the basis of how I liked the scent in the box or in some cases how poorly it had fared on its journey thus far or in one case how hard it was to fit into the new, sturdy box. This is so exciting!
Mike said,

Rachel, please take as many incenses as you like from the box. If it ever gets in the neighborhood of running out the newest person in the chain can just route it through me, I have plenty more to add. If there’s one thing I want to see is some of these scents finding a new home.Best, Mike

I’ve been adding reviews to this site as I’ve been testing them (quite a few of the Indian ones will be under the “Review Your Incenses” page” as they don’t have pages of their own yet) and it would be interesting to see your own comments on them too once you’ve tried them as I’m not sure that my nose is living on the same planet as everyone-elses, ha!ha!

I would like to be a part of this chain. I started by purchasing to many boxes of things that I thought I might like, when I should have purchased a lot of sample boxes. I would like to move some of these along and look for others that would better fit my needs.

I’d love to join, too. (I’m up in Canada, so if the chain is split up by destination, you’re welcome to lump me with either the Americans or the Europeans.)

I definitely don’t think how many incenses you have to contribute should be a defining factor, the goal being mostly to find new homes for unwanted incenses. Welcome aboard!

I’d like to join the list please, although if you are hoping the list members will have lots of unwanted incenses to add to the package, I realise it would be only fair for me to be added some way down the list as I only have a few incenses to contribute at this point in time. I am in the UK.

Hello Malchus, thanks for stopping by and joining the queue. And likewise, although I don’t read German it looks like you’re doing fine work at your own blog (encens-blogspot.com). I popped on over and saw you had a recent review for the Laxmi Dhoop, which may be the smokiest (although not unpleasant) incense I’ve ever encountered.
Anyway I’ll be giving the people I sent the initial package to the time they need to sort through things which should give the queue some time to grow.

Great Idea. As i’m from overseas and i’d love to take part in it (And i got lots of unwanted incense here) i’m already thinking about starting the same thing seperate for Europe (I am not sure if there is enough interest by now, but i’m sure there will be in some time). And by the way, thanks for the link and keep up your good and very interesting work!

First of all, Nancy Hyton has volunteered to be next in the chain (you can send me your snail mail address to my home e-mail and I can pass it on to those with the box). Each new person who wants to be part of the chain should say so in the comments. If there are a lot of takers, we can easily break this up into groups, over time.
I did want to ask however: I do think this should be open internationally, that is, usually there will be plenty of incenses in a box to make up for shipping costs that might be a bit higher mailing overseas. However if there are enough people interested overseas it might be worth having separate chains.
Anyway, I bring some of these ideas up as food for thought and look forward to any ideas…
