A mild warning about Capricorn’s Lair

One incense dealer worth avoiding appears to be Capricorn’s Lair, and it’s really quite a shame. It’s the only place I know of that has a resin and incense of the month club and both sounded like a really fun thing, so I went for the former. For about $30 + postage a month you get maybe $40 in resins and such and, supposedly, a couple rolls of charcoal so you have something to burn the resins on. Well, when my order showed up, it didn’t come with the two rolls of charcoal, but what I did get instead was a note saying that a customer was not allowed to claim that there was something missing from the package and three signatures to “prove” that the order complete. Needless to say, I tried contacting the company twice, at the very least to confirm, like it said in the blurb, that I’m supposed to get two rolls of charcoal. Nothing. And strangely enough I haven’t been charged or contacted about the second month even though I didn’t resign from the club. That’s bad business in my book, I guess they’re happy with their current clientele. Beware.

Capricorn’s Lair is not just continuing their unethical practices–they have graduated to theft and credit card fraud. I placed a very small order in August, thinking for $13 ($19.14 including s/h) I wouldn’t mind waiting even a long time.

They sent two emails confirming my small order, and when I questioned the second one (more than a week after my actual order) and requested an estimate on shipping time, the only response I got was asking if I wanted to purchase anything else.

Then a nasty little surprise in my credit card statement, showing they had sucked up an extra $300 over the amount of my order. I sent the entire email thread showing the actual cost of the order (itemizing it TWICE) to my credit card company and they informed CL that they were responsible for the charges.

I received one last email from Capricorn’s Lair indicating they had canceled…my $19.14 order. Not a word about the $300 they had stolen and kept for over a month. Judging by their record online, if I hadn’t gone directly to my credit card company, they’d have had it for much longer.

    Greetings;
I’m so glad that my friend found this and sent me the link. I too am a small metaphysical shop here in Canada and have fallen for their bad business habbits.

It happened once before but they made good so I waiting a while in between before putting another order in. Well this time I had particular items as I had a very nice client order something that only they carried a good price. Well 4 months later after contacting them on a daily bases I get an email back stating that they had copied the address wrong and it was being sent back and that they would be mailing out another package A.S.A.P. Two more weeks goes by and still no word I just sent them an email last week demanding my money back and they did it that day. I will NEVER EVER do business with them again. Its embarrasing to have to tell your customers over and over again in 5 months that their items hasn’t arrived yet.

Anyone wanting to do business I know their stuff looks nice but they don’t care about their online clients. Please Beware.

What a shame they’re still continuing their unethical business practices. It’s probably a foregone conclusion that ORS recommends avoiding them for anything.

So the drama continues. Hmmm… Amazing isn’t it? And in this economy too. I can’t go back and order again. I just can’t. They will do it to me again eventually. I gotta find another source.

Anyone know where to find a really good dragon’s blood essential oil? Cap Lair had a nice one. I’ve never found another like it thus far. It had a bit of a sweet odor that lingered after the initial D. Blood scent hit your nose. I think it might be JoJoba oil with DB resin and some Cardamom. I am not versed/skilled in essential oil making but if I can make it myself, I might after all this. It was an awesome oil for my incense shapes.

I found a resource for the frankincense and myrrh oils but not the DB yet. I keep purchasing sample bottles though. I am determined to find a supplier or make it myself.

Any ideas where to find the likes of C.Lair’s D.Blood essential oil?

Wow. Well, I have to add this. I ordered for CL about two years ago and although the first order was good, the second was odd. Odd in that the dragon’s blood EO was not the same quality as it was the first time I ordered. I just ordered from them again in very early February 2012. I waited for the order and no shipment came. I emailed and was told they “were working as fast as they could and were running behind”. I was gracious and waited. I received an email stating the shipment was sent on March 14 but had NO tracking number. I waited patiently. Still no shipment arrived.

I am very upset as I ordered just over $49 in EOs. My business can’t handle this kind of behavior or loss at this point. I am a start-up. So I have been emailing and calling almost daily and just today I left a rather annoyed voice mail asking for someone…anyone…to respond to me about my missing order. It has been over 45 days so PayPal won’t refund at this point. It IS amazing how they manage to stay in business. I won’t use them again. Beth at Essence has been wonderful. I just ordered from Katlyn at Mermade Magical Arts. Waiting to see what she is like to do business with.

I hope to get my order…eventually…out of Capricorn’s Lair. Once I do, I’ll never go back.

I have been in business ion-line for 12 years and I used to purchase wholesale from them, but their business practices were terrible and when I complained ( they took 8 weeks to fill and deliver a simple wholesale order that included nothing that needed to be hand made.. just pull it of a shelf and pack it up! This happened more than once!), I was told to take my years long business relationship elsewhere. Someone has a bad temper, not good for business in this economy!
Personally, I am very vigilant about whom I buy from for my store, as a seller of metaphysical goods, I want to know about the “vibes” where the items have been, it makes a hugh difference… just ask my customers!
Sadly, my experience with them was only the second in so long that ended in a cessation of business with the company, most others were willing to listen and be of service to me as I am to others.

Thank you for your comment Christina. I am looking for a good place to do business locally but Capricorn’s Lair does not seem to be the right place. I have seen many testimonials like yours. Personally, I would not do business somewhere that they don’t appreciate their clientele.

I’m actually glad this keeps coming to attention actually. Frankly it boggles the mind Capricorn’s Lair is still in business as they seem to believe they’re above reproach. I consider myself lucky I just lost out on a $2 packet of charcoal, considering other customers have been hit a lot harder. Hamid, I’ve never used them before, but Tom’s Incense Store seems to sell internationally and carry Mystic Temple, so you might want to check with them if you’re having trouble getting them.

I’ve ordered from Tom’s Incense store and I received the exact items I ordered; they were well packaged and delivered very fast. He also threw in a few samples, even though it was a small order.

Sorry to ressurect this old thread, but just to say that I once made a mild criticism of Capricorn’s Lair on a feedback form and received an E Mail from them telling me to take my custom elsewhere! Reader I did just that.
Which was a pity because at that time I was buying Mystic Temple Incences from them and MT does not export directly to Europe ( which btw is incredibly short-sighted if still the case ).

Yup. I update the story a bit later in the blog, including a link to a few customer testimonials. It’s a wonder they’re still going. I’m glad all I lost was a couple rolls of charcoal, all of which I probably wouldn’t be using at this point anyway.

Want a real ‘eye-opener’ about Capricorn’s Lair? Check out their info on the Better Business Burea of Utah’s website: http://www.saltlakecity.bbb.org/commonreport.html?bid=13001092&language=1&bureau=&bbbid=

Seriously, I will NEVER do business with these people again. Totally unethical and irresponsible in their business dealing, both at the retail and wholesale level.

    Buyer, seriously, beware!!
