I really shouldn’t be enabling you, Janet, but if you haven’t already done so, I do suggest that you pick up a few boxes of Chanda Devi’s aromatherapy incense that is on sale now at EOTA. I ordered a sampler pack of chandra devi aromatherapy jasmine incense, and once I lit the first stick, I immediately regretted that I hadn’t ordered a full sized pack.
It’s a really nice quality incense, with a lovely soft floral jasmine scent. This is more like a true jasmine scent, and not the jasmine oil that is found in Pure Incense and other indian style types. So there’s no other scents of vanilla, cocoa, and honey that are present in Pure Incense. It’s just a lovely true jasmine flower type scent that wafts through the air. As that it’s half price now (for the next 24 hrs at least), I recommend buying a packet or two. I’m fairly certain that you won’t regret it.

That’s good to know actually, based on the 3 Chandra Devi samples I’ve received over the years I wouldn’t have touched any of their products, so it’s good to know at least one of their lines is good.

ALSO-just received Email from Shroff Channabasappa that their latest shipment should be arriving chez Beth in a week or so! ALAS-I will be out of the country so guys, please leave a few sticks for me…… As a result of just buying a house I really am NOT shopping much right now-I figured incense was an unusual and reasonably priced treat…..but since starting to read ORS I am going nuts with it! There is just so much to try. Im considering buying some bakhoors and a heater, as well as exploring Japanese incense further.

The heater will open up a whole new world of scent. I love mine and use it daily. Forget the houses foundation, buy Frankincense tears and Sandalwood chips 🙂

That’s funny that you should say that, Ross…even as I type, I have three guys working in the hole that used to be the living room of my hundred-year-old house, rebuilding the entire substructure.
Now, ask me how much that has slowed down my incense acquisition!

Yep I have to agree. I’ve found it a little difficult to adjust to a heater, but once I did, there can be some days where I just switch between Hakusui, Hougary and Heartwood. 😀

Maharani, go for it, the electric heater and bakhoors, that is. The heater retails for about $50 at Mermade, and it’s nice to have. It’s great for bakhoors as that it doesn’t scorch the bahkhoor woodchips or tablets (presuming of course that you adjust the setting to about 10-15).
A great place to get bakhoor online is Paradiseperfumes.com. I’ll post a quick little review for them in the ‘Review Your Incense Retailer’ forum soon.

I have looked at Paradiseperfumes a couple of times and their bakhoors look delectable, as do their perfumes (another addiction of mine). I would very much appreciate a review and am looking forward to trying some out. Just reading about them is a feast of sorts.

As for being out of town when the shroffs arrive at EOTA, while on your travels have you considered going to an internet cafe and placing your order from one their computers? This, of course, is presuming that you won’t have a laptop or netbook with you while travelling.
Anyway, just a suggestion.

She-who-is-always-complaining-about-incense LOVED the Shroffs!!! I gave her Mysore Sandalwood, Paneer, Nargis 1931, a few sticks of Mogra (all I could spare, HA!), and Jasmine 1940. Her favorites are Sandalwood and Paneer. She liked Nargis a lot but hasnt yet tried the Jasmine. She liked the Mogra but prefers the first two being rather traditional in her prefs.
She told me a story about a cousin of ours who lives in Bangalore and burns rather fine incense….My M asked Parvati where she bought it. P got rather vague and said she couldnt recall, and that is her usual MO when asked about things she has-she can never recall where she got the R1,560,000 emerald necklace for example……-this is a rather Indian trait actually. My M doesnt much care for people making mysteries like this, but they always do. My M is convinced now that P bought her incense at Shroff in Bangalore but P would rather die than tell anyone as she wants to be the one with the best incense…..jewellery-whatever-people are very competitive in India about things like this…..One has to use underhand means…..
That said, she loved the incense. She asked me about getting some Frankincense resin as in India it is believed that fumigating the house with it keeps off drishti-the evil eye that comes from envy. Id like to order her some Hougary Frank, but cannot find a UK distributor-I will order from Mermade and send her some. In the meantime she ordered 3 incenses from Jivada, which Hamid has praised so highly.

Mitti attar? I totally missed that exchange between you two, because I definitely would have jumped in. One of my favorite things!!! I love that scent, although I haven’t figured out the best way to use it. Do you like vetiver oil? I also have an oil that is a co-distillation of vetiver with mitti…wonderful!

@ Janet – love vetiver oil! I have 2 or 3 Indian attars that have it as a component, perhaps my favorite being Ruh Khus which I get here:

She is continuing to complain about many other things, so don’t worry…. the mitti attar exchange was part of a discussion about Loban and its earthy notes (considered an oddity in the West), my point being that earthy notes are much appreciated in India, mitti attar being the best example. Its on the site somewhere…..

My challenge for the Mitti is what exactly to do with it in order to use it to its best advantage…
I hope one day to be a good enough perfumer to be able to feature it in a blend without feeling like I am covering up that wonderful wet earth scent – Mitti is one I can sniff nonstop, just like incense!

In India it is worn as perfume-I think youd be very innovative using it in a perfume blend. People go on and on about the “marine” notes in the newer scents-frankly they dont sound that great. Why not-erm-break new GROUND (HA!) with a mitti note in a sophisticated perfume?? No one has done that, say, at Tom Ford…

Thanks! I like digging up obscure facts, and there is a lot out there that is not generally known. I took She-who-always-complains-about-cheap-incense grocery shopping in the largest Indian grocery store in London today and OF COURSE checked out the incense: no surprise there was NOTHING by Shroff. HEM had some Dhoops, which I have never seen before (Sandalwood, Rose, Mogra), and I bought an amber flora masala dhoop by Sital to try out-no idea if its any good. Store had nice dhoopdanis though…..

So, is there anybody else besides me that is going broke because of Beth’s 12 days of Christmas sales? I placed a large order just before the start of the sale, and I purchased some more stuff just now because today’s sale, imo, is just awesome! Sales on japanese incense, Fred Soll, and Pure Incense! I had to restrain myself because of my other large order, and because there will be more goodies ahead…
Oh well, other women spend their money on other vices – shoes, handbags, perfumes…etc. Me, it’s incense. LOL.
