Upcoming from Ross

Lots of new scents to sample over at Japan Incense when I went over there this last weekend. A review of 5 new scents from Gyokushodo by this weekend (these guys are the master of the subtle, multi-layered approach). Plus at some point some new floral/spice sticks (about 6-7 different ones) from a smallish maker(who shall remain nameless at the moment).

The first week in July I will be part of a 10 blog and 12 perfumers event called the “The Mystery of Musk” which is being organized by the Natural Perfumers Guild. You can read more about it at the above link. It should be great fun and provide some real insight into what is one of the most sought after scents in both perfume and incense. The list of perfumers and bloggers is pretty amazing. I invite you to check out the differnt blogs as these people have a lot of experience and know how in the olfactory arts.

I/we will be doing a post on incenses that feature the scent of musk in June as a sort of companion piece. Actually I just now thought of this so we will be headed to the secret Lab to figure it out πŸ™‚

    Part 2, Part 3

I have spoken to Ambrosia over the phone, it may be I’ll soon receive a sample of her personal Musk offering to the Perfume World – Craving, created for The Mystery of Musk Competition.

I’ll tell you, that postman can’t get here quick enough πŸ˜‰

    Ohhh, yummy!
Can I have a sample of your musk incense to sniff when it’s finished?
I’m am using similar ingredients in my perfume, so it will be interesting to see how they compare in the different forms….

Looking foward to reading your thoughts….this is such a great project!

Thanks for stopping by Ambrosia! I figure this will be a real eye opener for many people as well as a great a way to showcase how creative, inventive and professional the natural perfume movement has become. After seeing who all is involved I feel very humbled as well as lucky to be a part of it.
Oh yes, maybe a trade in a few months, the incense needs to sit for awhile so all the parts can marry up. -Ross

    Mmmmmm πŸ™‚

This March 7, 2009 post and associated comments by Dan F contain a link which is still working if folks would like to read MUSK An Essay from Juice magazine Issue #3.

Here’s what Dan F wrote before he posted the link…

“A few weeks ago I had this question – question about musk – what is it? how does it smell? Well, I found my answer in this essay (link is below).”

Thanks Glennjf ..Recently i got to smell an empty musk pod that was (I think) 5-10 years old. Unbelievably strong ad nothing like “clean laundry” Pretty much bowl you over. But in massive dilution musk becomes something very magic. Now the trick becomes to find some substance that does not cause harm to the deer. There are things that are close and perfumers can work their magic to mimic it. But there is still a huge third world market(powered by1st world ? funding) for the stuff. -Ross
