Posting guidelines for incense companies and sellers

I’ve been noticing something of an uptick in posts by incense companies of late although you probably wouldn’t notice as I don’t tend to let most of these through. Olfactory Rescue Service is a site aimed to be a resource for the incense consumer and so I don’t think it’s a good idea to allow companies to spam the site with links. Most of the time this is really obvious, like when a company will post in a thread that’s over 3 or 4 years old and has had no comments on it in just as long. To me there’s no effort to be a part of the community here, which is one good way for me to be able to tell if there’s a balanced approach to being here.

So what’s the balanced approach? Well, I’m definitely far more inclined to let posts like this through when they’re being informative and specifically addressing a person’s question. But in allowing a post like this through, then I don’t expect the frequency of this to go up to where these comments are dominating the feed. It’s not OK, just because you carry a particular brand of incense, to spam your company link on that page. I don’t buy spam-generated stuff like “I love your website” and then a link to an incense company. You won’t see most of this stuff here because we won’t let it through.

On the other hand, I’d like to think I’m approachable and I do want to get the word out there about reputable and honest incense suppliers and companies. So if you are one of these companies and would like to touch base, my contact information is on the About page. This is a much more effective route to getting the word spread. On the other hand if your company is one of those that makes synthetic perfume on charcoal stick kind of stuff, then this site probably isn’t right for you either.

Also, to many of these companies, this is not an incense retail site except for an occasional boutique kind of thing from one of our staff. So inquiries into sales, will not be addressed or replied to, particularly because this should be very obvious from a cursory look at things here, it tells me you’re not really paying attention.

Anyway questions on this page are welcome here, with the caveat that some things just aren’t up for discussion and browbeating and bullying me or my staff over the rules isn’t something I’ll tolerate or even humor. Yes there are some incense companies that will occasionally post here and the reason they do is because they understand the balance here and what is trying to be achieved. We’d of course like that to be true for everybody.

I’ve been getting the same treatment on my incense blog. Polite requests to stop doing it have had no impact. Writing to the company concerned meets with silence. Once or twice is OK, but this guy just keeps on doing it. I remove the comment: “Very wonderful website you have. Very useful with lots of information. We also sell….”, but then it comes back. Sometimes the next day, sometimes a month later. Aaargh! I have never tried their incense, and have said to them – send me some, I’ll review it. No response. I’ve said – tell; me where to buy it. No response. I wonder if it is the company themselves doing it, or just some idiotic troll.

Maybe blogspot has a way of changing the comment approving so you have to approve a comment first. It makes our lives a lot easier around here. Thanks Steve, very cool to see you have an incense blog going!

I’ll take a look. I haven’t been going long, and don’t promote, so I don’t get many comments anyway. My understanding is that I can either receive comments or block them. But I will look closer to see if I can moderate them before they appear. Cheers!

Steve, I added your blog to our list on the left. Good luck with it!

I also am grateful you have the savvy and energy to do this filtering.
You and Ross and the ORS staff have made something damn cool.
The place has a pleasant odor and a warm fuzzy feel! I am safe here.
At some point most of us have had to deal with that salesman that sits
on your lap until physically removed. Here on the net they come with a
virtual entourage of stealth avatars. Sometimes you can’t catch ’em all.

Thanks Alan! We have an “approve first” policy here so we can catch nearly all of it on the front end. It’s only once we accept a comment that someone can post at will as long as they’re on the same URL address.

    Hi Mike,
I’m sure 99.99% of your readers and contributors agree with you Mike. It’s the only site I can think of when one isn’t bombarded with annoying adverts or biased sales views. Thanks.

Appreciate the comment and support Geo! I aim to keep it this way.

Agreed on retail posts. Although as an infrequent poster, but a VERY frequent reader for the last several years, I have collected many boxes of Japanese incense. So many in fact, that I would like to sell some partial boxes at a significant discount to retail. Of course the proceeds would be used to buy more JI. The ORS members should get first shot. It would be nice to be able to post “for sale” items by members. If that is too much admin work, then maybe allow a note/link to a current ebay sale.

        Just a thought.

          Hi Joe,
Sounds good, but how do you keep the pushy commercial sellers getting in on the act. So my own view is please keep this site Sales Free and Ad free. I want to read facts and opinions….no more. Perhaps Joe, just an E-Mail address for interested parties would be ok?
From one old “stick in the mud”.

Probably will be difficult to manage, if not impossible. Maybe Ebay, without ORS promotion, is the way to go. I will try it in the next 3 weeks or so, and see how it goes. I will post nothing here that is not approved by the admin.

Hi Joe, thanks for the comments. We probably don’t have the energy to monitor and work with member for sale lists at this point. You could also check out http://incensetrading.wikidot.com/ as a place to get rid of unwanted incenses.
